Lord of the Rings Wordle

Six guesses. Five letters. A puzzle pulled straight out of Middle-earth.

Lord of the Rings Wordle is a word puzzle for fans of Tolkien. The rules are the classic Wordle rules — find a hidden 5-letter word in six tries, with colour-coded clues after every guess — but every answer comes from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit: hobbits like FRODO and BILBO, dwarves like GIMLI and BALIN, places like SHIRE, MORIA and ROHAN, treasures like RINGS, STING and PHIAL, and the wider peoples and powers of the world — ELVES, EAGLE, VALAR, MAIAR.

It is free, runs in your browser, and needs no account. Play one quick round, or set off on an endless journey through the whole word bank.

Why Tolkien fans love this Wordle

Ordinary Wordle uses ordinary words. Here the vocabulary is half the fun: every solved puzzle is a small trip from Hobbiton to the gates of Moria. If you know your Took from your Brandybuck and your Maia from your Vala, you already have an edge.

There are no spoilers and nothing to read — just the words. It works as a quick break or a longer session, on phone or desktop, and your streak and best time are saved locally so you can come back and beat them.

Themed packs narrow the answer pool: "Heroes & Folk" for the people, "Realms & Roads" for the places, "Blades & Treasures" for the relics, and "Free Peoples & Powers" for the races and the forces behind the world.

How to play Lord of the Rings Wordle

Type any 5-letter word and press Enter. Each tile changes colour: green means the letter is correct and in the right spot, yellow means it is in the word but elsewhere, and grey means it is not in the word at all.

Use that feedback over your six guesses to close in on the answer. In endless mode you can play as many puzzles as you want; in a themed pack the answer is limited to that category, so you can lean on what you know about Middle-earth heroes, realms, treasures, or peoples.

Solve in fewer guesses and less time to score higher and climb the leaderboard. Lose, and the answer is revealed so you can learn it for next time.

Tips for solving the Lord of the Rings Wordle

Open with strong vowels

Tolkien names love the letters O, A and I — FRODO, MORIA, ARWEN, AINUR. A first guess that tests several vowels (try STONE, ROADS or ELVES) narrows things down fast before you start guessing names.

Think in categories

If green and yellow tiles look like a name, run through the Fellowship and the dwarves. If they look like a place, think SHIRE, ROHAN, MINAS. Knowing which bucket the answer is in cuts your options quickly.

Watch the doubled letters

Several answers double up: FRODO, BILBO, GLOIN, ELVES, HALLS. If a letter comes back yellow and you have spare guesses, test it in two positions.
